In a bid to strengthen the academia-industry partnership through amicable interchange of contemporary ideas and motivate students and faculty members towards research, the University of Lahore (UoL) Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE) organized the International Symposium on Wireless Systems and Networks (ISWSN) close to the end of the year 2017 at Lahore’s Defence Road Campus. The event that was largely sponsored by UoL and Higher Education Commission (HEC) attracted practicing engineers and industry representatives in areas related to wireless systems and networks in particular, and allied fields in general, DEE faculty academic staff and students.
According to the DEE Focal Person, Assistant Professor Dr. Ghulam Abbas, the symposium had presentations of technical papers and tutorials on issues of contemporary significance in wireless systems and networks, signal processing for communications, and communication related aspects of modern power systems. He said, the symposium registered a lot of new ideas that will be a basis for policy formulation in Pakistan’s ICT and Telecommunications industries. “You know that Pakistan is presently undergoing a very rapid development in all spheres of life. It is being envisaged that by 2050, Pakistan will be included in top 20 economies of the world. Information and communications technologies are looked as a major contributor to this vision,” he added.
The historical symposium themed; “The Role of Communications in Socio-Economic Development of a Society” had Dr. Kamran Arshad, from Ajman University, UAE, addressing participants on how Cognitive M2M Solutions can boost Pakistan Economy: Challenges and Opportunities; Dr. Yu-Dong Yao of Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken-New Jersey, USA, tackling Security and Secondary User Access Control in Cognitive Radio Networks; and Dr. Alauddin (Al) Javed, Javed Wireless Technologies Inc., Ottawa, Canada presenting on the Perceptions of Present and Future Wireless Networks. These were international speakers with vast expertize in their areas of specialty, according to Dr. Ghulam who talked to the Spectacle newsletter writer, December 5, 2017.
Dr. Yao, the USA based professor and a fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), also delivered a separate presentation to faculty members and students of DEE, UOL that was participatory and educative.
Commenting on the scientific and research dimension of the symposium, Dr. Ghulam said the event attracted 115 academic papers, 36 of which were accepted and are awaiting publication. Mr. Sajid Rafique of GM IP Core Network, PTCL who engaged participants on IP Core Network Transformation challenges and Mr. Muhammad Javed from EVP Technical, PTCL talked about the role of PTCL in ICT as national speakers.
This academic and memorable activity had Hafiz Tehzeeb ul Hassan as Chairman organizing committee; Dr. Muhammad Zafrullah, Dr. Muhammad Nasir Khan, Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad, Dr. Muhammad Fainan Hanif, Dr. Ghulam Abba and Dr. Ali Raza as members.
