University of Lahore College of Medicine and Dentistry (UCMD) under its Department of Pathology had the privilege to host yet another educational international event titled “1st International Pathology Conference” from April 10-12, 2018, in regards to Continuing Medical Education (CME). The historical conference that had valued support from Health Asia was organized under the chairmanship of Prof. Mulazim Hussain Bukhari, the HoD Pathology. Pakistan Medical and Dental Council raised up the value of the conference when it accredited 18 hours (of the conference) for CME. This move boosted the participation of medical professionals.
The conference that was aimed at sharing the knowledge of international advancements in the field of Pathology and raising awareness about the accreditation, standardization and ethical practice in the field of Pathology, was officially inaugurated by Pro-Rector Allied Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Shahid Mahmood Malik. He congratulated the Pathology department for spearheading the organization of the conference and appreciated all participants for valuing their profession.
The Minister for Primary and Secondary Health Department, Government of Punjab, Honorable Khawaja Imran Nazeer was the chief guest at the closure. He appreciated UOL for contributing human capital to the health profession in Pakistan and echoed government commitment towards the health sector.
Five pre-conference workshops encompassing all the fields of pathology were held at UOL Main Campus and Lahore General Hospital. Workshops were moderated by Prof Merva Soluk Tekkesin, (Istanbul University, Turkey), Prof. Shahid Pervez, Dr. Asif Loya, Prof. M.H. Bukhari, Gen. Tahir Khadim, and Prof. Dr. Javed Asif (UOL). Others were Prof Dr Nisar Ahmad (CHL), Prof. Khalid Mahmood, Prof. Afia Zafar (AKU), Prof. Tariq Rehmani (Ameeruddin Medical College, PGMI LGH), and Brig. (Rtd) Amir Ijaz.

The conference was energized by an Evening Research Session held at Chughtai Lab, Jail Road, Lahore. Prof. A.S. Chughtai chaired this session that had presentations from Dr. Omer Malikzai from Afghanistan and Prof Aejaz Nasir, MD, Eli Lilly & Co, Indianapolis, USA. The former addressed participants on the Status of Pathology Services in Afghanistan and the latter on Molecular Pathobiology of Gastric Cancer.
On the second day of the conference, the UOL Dean of University College of Dentistry (UCD) Prof. Dr. Moghees Baig delivered a state of the art lecture on “Can exfoliative cytology be used as an early detection tool for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma) or it should be only used for screening?” His presentation was followed by CME seminar on “Quality Management, Accreditation and Ethical Challenges in Clinical Lab,” that Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) conducted. To wind up the second day, a memorable festivity and dinner was arranged for the guests. It was beautiful cultural program with poetry of Anwar Masood and Fakhar Abbas, students’ musical performances and lavish dinner.
Young researchers participated enthusiastically in the second session of last day of Pathology Conference which was chaired by Prof. I.A Naveed. Dr Mehwish Javed, Dr. Umme Habiba, Dr. Syed Zubair Shah, and Dr. Saadiya Mushtaq presented their original research papers on advances in pathology.
At the closure, the conference chair Prof. Dr M.H.Bukhari thanked all the international and national speakers and participants for the fruitful discussions and contributions. He also appreciated the wonderful efforts made by UCMD students in managing and organizing the event.
The event enabled the young researchers, professors, consultants and post-graduate medical residents to broaden their knowledge, skills and capacity especially in the area of pathology. The contributions and efforts of the Pathology laboratories of Agha Khan University Hospital, Chughtai Labs and Pathology labs of Shaukat Khanum Hospital were equally appreciated.
